Engineering, computing, and data science
Medical devices aren't built by biomedical engineers alone
Every medical device needs mechanical, electrical, materials, and manufacturing engineers, plus software engineers and data scientists. Last year's lineup shows how many paths lead into medtech.
Software, data science, and AI
Talks on building healthcare software and on using AI and data in diagnostics.
Electronics
The IEEE Electronics Packaging Society sponsored and moderated the industry panel, which included a Meta engineer who worked on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Robotics and mechanical
A talk from Intuitive on performance and safety verification for robotic medical devices.
Materials and manufacturing
Speakers included a co-founder of CruzFoam and a manufacturing engineer from Molecular Devices.
This year's theme
MedTech in Transition
Technology, Talent, and the Changing Landscape
Medical devices are changing fast. More software, more data, and a shifting set of rules and funding shape what gets built and who builds it. BABDC 2027 brings Bay Area medtech together to talk about where the industry is headed, and what it takes to build a career in it.
Technology
Software, AI, and data are now part of how devices are designed, tested, and approved.
Talent
Medtech teams hire across engineering, computing, and data science. Hear what they look for and how students get there.
The changing landscape
How regulation, funding, and market shifts are reshaping the industry.
Speakers

FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to be an engineering student to attend?
No. BABDC is open to students from any major. Most attendees study engineering or science, including:
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Materials
- Computer science
- Data science
- And more
Medical devices need all of them, along with regulatory, clinical, and business expertise. Last year’s speakers worked in software, robotics, and manufacturing as well as clinical and regulatory roles.
Is food provided?
Yes. Meals are provided for attendees.
What should I wear?
Business casual. Many attendees come to meet people from industry, so dress as you would for an internship or career-fair conversation.
Can I come for part of the day?
Yes. Check-in is flexible, and you’re welcome to arrive late or leave whenever you need to. The full schedule will be posted soon, so you can plan around the sessions you most want to see.
